Literacy

Reader’s Workshop

Students have explicit Reading lessons five times per week minimum of 50 minutes each.  The focus for these lessons include decoding through phonics and ‘Thinking Within The Text’ strategies in addition to ‘Thinking Beyond and About The Text’ comprehension strategies.

During these workshops, students begin with explicit teaching of the strategy followed by a range of activities such as:

  • Guided Reading
  • Reciprocal Reading
  • Independent reading using their Reader’s Notebooks

Writer’s Workshop

We teach writing through units of study that focus on a particular genre and text type for five weeks duration. Using Misty Adoniou’s approach, teachers explicitly model text types and features to develop student confidence to then create their own independent work.  Using a mentor text assist students to develop their depth of vocabulary and experiment with different sentence structures.  During these workshops, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore the purpose and structure of the text type
  • Unpack the key features and language devices of the text type using, for example, worked examples, shared writing, co-created anchor charts etc.
  • Move through the writing process
  • Publish and celebrate their work
