School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

WHAT IS SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT? (SWPBS)

In 2023 we began implementing a new framework at Parktone called School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). SWPBS is a framework that assists schools to build a positive and safe learning environment and culture with the aim to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for students. SWPBS is an approach that focuses on teaching all students expected behaviours in line with our school values – The 7 Habits.

As part of this, we are beginning to develop agreed behaviours for different areas around the school, such as in classrooms and out in the playground.  These behaviours, like other forms of learning, are explicitly taught to students and reinforced through our school Habit Card system and verbal feedback.

WHAT DOES SWPBS LOOK LIKE AT PARKTONE PRIMARY SCHOOL?

Below is our student friendly Behaviour Management Flowchart which all Parktone staff use when addressing minor / major behaviours.

A clear set of behaviour expectations are developed around our school values

  • Be Proactive
  • Begin with the End in Mind
  • Put First Things First
  • Think Win Win
  • Seek First to Understand then to be Understood
  • Synergise
  • Sharpen the Saw

Matrixes are developed through consultation with students, staff and the community.

BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATION MATRICIES

At Parktone, matrices clarify what our behaviours should look, sound and feel like. Expected behaviours are explicitly taught in classrooms and consistently reinforced throughout the school. Our matrices are displayed and positioned in many locations around the school and are referred to and discussed regularly. Currently the matrices are a work in progress, as we continue our journey with SWPBS.  We will continue to review, refine and create matrices for different zones in our school. The outcome is to have a complete matrix that encompasses all of our school zones, that we signpost around the school.

Modelling and reinforcing positive behaviour is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Explicitly teaching our behavioural expectations and acknowledging students for demonstrating them is key to success.

WHEN DO WE TEACH OUR EXPECTED BEHAVIOURS?

  • At the beginning of each school year, classroom expectations are co-constructed with students. These are updated at the start of each term with students
  • Often enough to achieve and maintain fluency (whole school and classroom level)
  • Student led videos and role plays
  • When problem behaviours increase
  • At teachable moments e.g. in the yard when on yard duty or in learning spaces

HOW CAN FAMILIES BE PARTNERS?

Support and reinforce Parktone’s behaviour expectations

Have the same or define your own family values (expectations) at home:
e.g. Respect: Self, others, environment.

Teach these behaviour skills – What does it look like, sound like, feel like?

Develop family routines for different times and locations throughout the day

Reinforce (feedback) and acknowledge your child when they demonstrate the behaviour expectation and / or routines and link them to one of your family values. Catch them doing good!

Practise, monitor and Re-teach expected behaviours if and when required
